The biosphere reserves are terrestrial or coastal ecosystem zones that stem from UNESCO's Man and the Biosphere Programme (MAB). They offer solutions that reconcile biodiversity conservation with its sustainable use. They aim to be a learning environment and a unifying milieu that enriches and pride of their region. Officially inscribed in UNESCO in 2000, the Lac Saint-Pierre Biosphere Reserve (RMBLSP) covers an area of nearly 7,394 km², including the five regional county municipalities (MRCs) bordering Lac Saint-Pierre: Pierre-De Saurel, Nicolet-Yamaska, Maskinongé, Bécancour, as well as the city of Trois-Rivières. It also includes two W8banakiak First Nations communities, Odanak and Wôlinak. The role of the RMBLSP is to implement the four functions of a Biosphere Reserve, namely biodiversity conservation, sustainable development, capacity building, and Indigenous reconciliation. The RMBLSP has a rich range of activities including agriculture, fishing, tourism, and industries.
