Along the channel of Île aux Sables is a prime location for observing, during nesting season, parent herons making their way to feed their young. The presence of a large number of these majestic birds is explained by the nearby heronry—the largest in North America—located on Grande Île. This island, designated as a wildlife refuge by the Government of Quebec, is home to a population of over 3,000 great blue herons that are constantly soaring through the skies. Swimming and fishing are highly recommended in this area. Access is safe via the upstream entrance of the channel. However, for boats with a deep draft, especially during low water levels, it is not advisable to use the eastern exit; turning back is the safer option.
